约翰·S·谢伟思，1909年生于成都一个美国传教士家庭，1933年——1945年在美国驻华使馆工作。1944年7月作为美国国务院政务官员和中、缅、印战区美军司令部政治顾问，参加“美国军事观察组”去延安，迄1945年3月，他和毛泽东、周恩来、朱德等作过多次正式和非正式的谈话，并和出席中共七大的领导人进行了广泛的接触。根据交谈和观察，他半年内向国务院电报、报告30余篇。他作为中共的同情者闻名。1945年6月，他因为美亚事件被捕，随后被国务院解职。
